Late February, Glynn County, Georgia town
A pair of well worn tennis shoes laced up and hit the ground
Shut the front door and took off around the block
Ahmaud Arbery went out on his daily jog
Working up a sweat, black skin shining hard
Ran right past Gregory McMichael’s front yard
Greg told his son Travis "go and grab the guns.
I just seen the enemy outside on the run”
They hopped into their good ol’ pickup truck
In self-defense, up behind Ahmaud they snuck
Loaded weapons, intentions a-best
Placed an innocent man under citizens arrest
Greg and Travis chased Ahmaud through the neighborhood
When he kept running, they knew he was up to no good
They finally met and Travis stepped out with his shotgun
Ahmaud reacted and towards Travis he lunged
They struggled some and shortly several shots were fired
Ahmaud lay breathless there and misidentified
You’re blind and mute if will not see and say
There is an Ugly Side to U.S. of A.
3 months gone by, and not a soul’s been charged
Two cold blood murderers walk free and not at large
In 2020 we like to think this can’t be done
But we’re still much closer than we think to 1961
Don’t you recognize me?
In the darkness of your day?
I’m the shadow hanging
at your bedside as you pray
I follow you through each doorway
